African Rock Python

 

DESCRIPTION COLORATION

Colors are somewhat similar to Python molurus but patterned differently. Pattern is marble-like.
Coloration = browns with yellow, cream, off-white, and dark brown to black markings.

 

SIZE

Max = 23 feet
Ave = 16.5 feet

 

HOME

Africa: South of the Sahara.

 

HABITAT

Open brushland; Rocky areas. Very often, near water; Many times, it can be found in water.

 

LIFESTYLE

Solitary. Mostly nocturnal; More aggressive than Python molurus.

 

PREDATORS

Panthers. Warthogs will attack African Rock Pythons as a means of offensive defense.

 

FOOD

Small mammals, large mammals including impala and panthers.

 

BREEDING

Clutch size = 40 to 100. Female will brood her eggs. Incubation temperature is approx. 85 degrees F. Incubation period lasts 75 to 85 days.

 

IN CAPTIVITY

 

These snakes easily adapt to proper captive conditions.
Vivarium for one adult snake = at least 6.5 feet x 1.5 feet x 1.5 feet.
Vivarium furnishings: Strong branches or similar apparatus for climbing; Water container large enough for snake to submerge it's entire body.
Temperature: Day = approx. 82 degrees F. Night = approx. 73 degrees F.
Humidity: Medium to dry - mimicking natural seasonal variation if possible.
Food: mice, rats, chickens, rabbits.

 

INTERESTING FACTS
  • Python sebae can breed with Python molurus. This interbreeding occurs in captivity.
  • It is reported that an Africa Rock Python once fasted for 29 months.
